A group of medical researchers are Duke University recently began a study on the genetic causes of severe acne.  The study will also partner with several dermatologists in the area.

The group hopes to have 250 participants who currently or have previously had severe acne and have treated it with an isotretinoin medication like Accutane, or any of its generic brands.

The study’s director stated, “If we can identify genetic factors that influence response to treatment, we’ll not only be able to improve how we use current medications, but may also discover new and safer ways of treating severe acne.”

The severe acne medication, Accutane, has been linked to several serious side effects like Ulcerative Colitis, IBD, and Crohn’s Disease.  If you or someone you love took this medication and subsequently experienced one of these side effects, contact the Accutane lawsuit attorneys of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.

Study shows link between obesity and acne in females

Posted on January 27th, 2012 No Comments

A new study has been conducted in Norway that shows a link between female obesity and the development of severe acne. The study consisted of 3,600 people in Oslo, Norway between the ages of 18 and 19.  The teenagers’ eating habits as well as weight and lifestyles were examined in the study.

The results showed that 10 percent of the female participants were classified as overweight and 15 percent of the males fell into that category also.  Among the overweight girls, 19 out of every 100 reported severe acne symptoms throughout the study as compared to only 13 out of every 100 average weight girls showing signs of acne problems.

The researchers took these numbers into account, as well as other factors, such as smoking and diet, to determine that obese females were two times more likely to suffer from acne than other girls in their same age category. This study has shown that there is a connection between weight and acne but it does not prove that one causes the other.

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases more common in northern climates

Posted on January 16th, 2012 No Comments

A recent study has been published that stated that the development of Inflammatory Bowel Disease may be less risky in places that have a warmer climate.

The study shows that this information is particularly true for those over the age of 30. These findings can possibly lead to new treatments for the disease because it is shedding light on what may cause this disorder. Inflammatory Bowel Disease includes crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

There were two studies done on nurses, one began in 1976 and the other began in 1989. It took down information on each woman and called them back every two years for an update.

None of the participants had IBD when the study began. By 2003, of the 238,000 women, 257 women  developed with Crohn’s disease and 313 developed ulcerative colitis. Women in southern climates had a 52 percent higher chance of developing Crohn’s disease by age of 30.
